Researcher and Group Leader at Instituto de Investigação e Inovação, University of Porto (2004-present). My background is an Integrated Master in in Animal Science (1994) and PhD in Ethology, Swedish University of Agricultural University (2001), complemented with postdocs at Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology, University of Porto, and Danish Centre for Bioethics and Risk Assessment (2001-2004). My research interests are behaviour and welfare of domestic (laboratory, farm and companion) animals and ethics of (animal) research and technology. My first research experience was with farm animal behaviour, and I have worked with pigs and laying hens. For the last 20+ years I have mainly worked with laboratory rodents and more recently also companion dogs. I continue to follow what is being done in research with farm animals, and I also have a personal interest in sport horses. I’m very committed to training future researchers and have set up training in laboratory animal science for researchers (FELASA accredited course) as well as a research summer school in One Health One Welfare in my institution / university.
