2026 ISAE Africa and West Asia regional conferece

Across Africa many production systems continue to face significant welfare-related challenges including poor housing conditions, inadequate handling and transportation practices, heat stress, disease burden, limited welfare awareness, and weak policy implementation frameworks which increasingly affect animal behaviour, productivity, health, and overall resilience of farming systems. In recognition of these emerging opportunities and challenges, the International Society for Applied Ethology Africa Region propose to organize its 2026 Regional Conference themed: “Behaviour to Welfare: Driving Innovative and Inclusive Animal Ethology in Africa and West Asia”

The conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for researchers, students, policymakers, industry stakeholders, animal welfare advocates, veterinarians, producers, and development partners to share scientific findings, practical experiences, technological innovations, and policy perspectives that can advance animal behaviour and welfare across diverse systems within the region.

The conference will particularly emphasize inclusive and context-specific approaches that integrate scientific evidence with local knowledge, strengthen regional collaboration, promote capacity building, and support the development of sustainable animal production and welfare systems responsive to both present and future challenges.

The conference sub-themes include:

  1. Advancing Animal Behaviour and Welfare through Community-Centred and Culturally Responsive Approach.
  2. Animal Behaviour, Welfare and Environmental Interactions in Sustainable Production Systems.
  3. Strengthening Animal Behaviour and Welfare through Evidence-Based Policy and Regulatory Systems.
  4. Climate Change and Stress Management in Farm Animals.
