Since 2004, Susanne Waiblinger is Associate Professor at the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Welfare of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, leading the group of human-animal relationship and ruminant behaviour and welfare. Susanne is a veterinarian specialized in ethology, animal husbandry and animal welfare science (i.a. Dipl. ECAWBM – AWSEL), starting to work in this field in 1991 for two years at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, after she has finished her doctoral thesis in immunology. Thereafter she worked in small and large animal practice and qualified as veterinary officer before joining the Vetmeduni Vienna in 1997 as lecturer. Besides on human-animal relationships in different species, her research focuses on the interactions of environment, social behaviour and welfare in dairy cows and goats, including ontogenetic aspects, as well as on on-farm assessment of animal welfare in ruminants and, more recently, in poultry.

There are nearly 700 members worldwide and each year the Society assembles for a major International Congress, where in addition to addresses by special keynote speakers, members present their latest research findings. There are also regular regional conferences held to encourage local knowledge exchange.
