Assistant Professor, Swine Behavior and Management

This position is available through a strategic departmental hiring plan to expand research and education to provide safe, reliable food for a growing world population and promote animal health and well-being. This position will focus on swine behavior and management. Advances in this area will improve swine health, production efficiency, and well-being. Next-generation systems for producing pork must be efficient, ecologically sustainable, and socially acceptable; understanding swine behavior is a prerequisite for achieving this goal. 

The Department of Animal Sciences invites applications to a faculty position in the area of swine behavior and management. The person hired will develop a nationally and internationally recognized, extramurally funded research and outreach program in applied swine behavior and management, and contribute to the department’s academic programs. Areas of interest include but are not limited to (1) developmental origins of adaptive behavior, (2) feeding behavior, (3) social behavior, (4) reproductive behavior, including maternal care, (5) adaptation to stress and the environment, (6) human-animal interactions, and (6) environmental management and health and disease. Potential to compliment ongoing research related to genetic programming and digital animal management technology is a plus.

The person hired will teach related undergraduate and graduate courses and collaborate with industry partners to execute impactful outreach and extension programs. This opportunity builds on our history and ongoing research in genetics, nutrition, meat science, precision management, immune and reproductive physiology, microbiology and animal systems with application to livestock and biomedical research and strengthens the preeminence of the Department of Animal Sciences.
