Laura Whalin

Student Representative (2019-2021)

Laura Whalin

Laura Whalin completed her BSc in Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University in the United States where she contributed to projects related to swine welfare (behavior, piglet care, and lameness). Due to her interests in animals and research, she pursued and completed a MSc through the Animal Welfare Program at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada where she looked at social housing for dairy calves. She is currently a PhD student in the Animal Welfare Program at UBC under the supervision of Dr. Marina von Keyserlingk. Laura is interested in how different housing and management options may influence calf welfare. Specifically she is researching the impact of feeding schedules and personality on calf behavior before and after weaning, and the effect of different housing environments on the feeding and activity of pre-weaned dairy calves. As an ISAE student representative, Laura looks forward to meeting new people, working with everyone, and sharing ideas and research in the coming years!
