Maria Camila Ceballos graduated in Animal Science at the National University of Colombia. She received her master's and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare from the São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil. She then worked at the University of Pennsylvania as a postdoctoral researcher. Currently, Maria Camila is an Associate Professor in Animal Welfare and Behaviour at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Her research group uses an integrated approach that combines real-world fieldwork, behavioural and physiological evaluations to test innovative ideas, develop tools and strategies to evaluate and promote welfare in domestic animals, and generate new knowledge to address welfare issues in production animals. Her main research fields are evaluating and identifying strategies to improve animal welfare, human-animal relationships, and cattle temperament.

There are also regular regional conferences held to encourage local knowledge exchange.
