Emma Roux
Student Representative (2025-2027)

My passion for animal welfare and ethology began during my agricultural engineering studies in France, through a research internship on the behaviour of livestock guarding dogs in the Pyrenees and the Alps. To pursue this interest, I volunteered in several research projects at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU, Uppsala), later returning in 2022 to complete my MSc thesis on the impact of feeding black soldier fly larvae on laying hen behaviour.
I am now doing my Ph.D. at the University of Calgary, Canada, under the supervision of Dr. Ed Pajor. My work focuses on abnormal maternal behaviour in beef cattle (mismothering), aiming to understand the risk factors, target specific management approaches and design prevention strategies. Outside of my PhD research, I enjoy participating in outreach activities to share the science of animal behaviour with broader audiences.
My first ISAE Congress in Utrecht (2025) gave me a strong sense of belonging. I am thrilled to now serve as a Student Representative and am eager to support students build their networks and find their own place within our ethology community.
