Emma Fàbrega i Romans is a senior researcher at the Animal Welfare Program at the Institute of Agricultural Research in Catalonia, Spain from 2003. Emma started her research journey with a BS in Veterinary Medicine (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) before completing a MS in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare (University of Edinburgh), a PhD in Veterinary Science(Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and, finally, a Postdoc in Animal Welfare at the Animal Welfare Centre (University of Melbourne). She has undertaken short post-doctoral stays in New Zealand (2008), in Canada (2013), Finland (2019) and Michigan State University, USA (2024). She is Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine from 2011. At the animal welfare program she has been mostly involved in the Development of research lines associated with pig behaviour and welfare. She has mostly worked on the areas of alternatives to painful procedures like piglet castration and tail docking, implications of livestock precision farming, alternative housing for sows at parturition, and the links between animal welfare and sustainability. She has participated in training and knowledge transference for university students, competent authorities and the private sector (truck drivers, farmers, slaughterhouse personnel), using active learning techniques. She has also been member of IRTA’s ethical committee since 2003.

There are nearly 700 members worldwide and each year the Society assembles for a major International Congress, where in addition to addresses by special keynote speakers, members present their latest research findings. There are also regular regional conferences held to encourage local knowledge exchange.
