Research Fellow - Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)

General Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic is seeking a postdoctoral Research Fellow to join their team under the mentorship of Dr. Arya Mohabbat to research the benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) on patient stroke rehabilitation. This research involves a collaborative study between Purina and Mayo Clinic. A clinical trial will evaluate the possible benefits of the presence of a therapy dog for patients seen for inpatient acute stroke rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic.  In particular, it will assess the emotional and well-being state of the patients and the therapy dogs, as well as changes in rehabilitative status during these sessions.
 
The Research Fellow for this position will be involved in the following:

  • scheduling and performing research project work related to human-animal interactions
  • participation in writing publications as a part of this research
  • all aspects of the study from start to finish

The successful candidate must:

  • have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree with an emphasis in ethology, psychology, or animal behavior science
  • show excellence in scholarly research in areas related to human-animal interactions, animal welfare, and/or affective states in animals.
  • be familiar with non-invasive methods to assess behavioral and physiological states
  • can solve problems in scientific and technical execution, interpret experimental data, and maintain accurate records
  • have experience in writing scientific manuscripts

A Ph.D. or equivalent degree with an emphasis in ethology, psychology, or animal behavior science. The candidate will schedule and perform research projects related to human-animal interactions. The candidate must show excellence in scholarly research in areas related to human-animal interactions, animal welfare, and/or affective states in animals. The candidate must be familiar with non-invasive methods to assess behavioral and physiological states. The candidate must have the ability to solve problems in scientific and technical execution, interpret experimental data and maintain accurate records. The candidate must have experience in writing scientific manuscripts.
