The overarching goals of the research program is to improve food animal health and welfare by (1) validating novel pain assessment techniques, and (2) developing safe and effective analgesic drug regimens that can be implemented on-farm. The collaborative research team at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University takes a multi-faceted approach to studying livestock pain, which includes analysis of behavior, facial grimacing, blood biomarkers, immunology, pharmacology, and neurobiology. We currently have funded research projects in cattle, pigs, and goats.
