In this USDA-funded project, a team of applied ethologists and bovine veterinarians are exploring animal welfare challenges associated management of compromised and non-performing calves in commercial beef feedyards. The graduate student working on this project will (1) characterize behavior of cattle managed in hospital and chronic pens, and (2) identify animal-based outcomes to assess animal welfare and aid decision making associated with compromised and non-performing cattle
